Kannawidan Ylocos Festival: Pride of the Ilocanos

     

     As the Philippines starts to recover from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, fiestas and celebrations are starting to return, giving Filipinos a well-needed dose of levity. In Ilocos Sur, the provincial government officially launched Kannawidan 2022 early this month, with a bevy of activities aimed at celebrating life and spreading joy.

     Kannawidan Ylocos Festival became an annual festival that aims to create awareness on the preservation of the province’ rich cultural heritage, practices and traditions, and a showcase of the different agriculture and industry products of the province. Kannawidan: In tagalog means 'nakaugalian', means tradition. A festival created to showcase the province' rich culture in different fields like arts, agriculture, dance and music, food and also province based products also known as OTOP (One Town One Product).


     To celebrated the event, a mass was held at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral as a thanks giving for a friutful celebration and also for giving the province a rich culture and heritage it's people can be proud and be known to. It is then followed by a Procession of all the Patron Saints of each Parishes of the Province. And for the first day of event which was ended with the Dancing Fountain Show and Fireworks Display.

     There would be the traditional games, yearly excellence awards in terms of service and education, different art and food contest, carnivals, pageants, variety shows, education day celebration and not to forget the booths where all the province' OTOP are being displayed and sold to visitors and tourist.


     To ensure the safety of guests and exhibitors, strict health guidelines are being observed during the events to prevent the spread of Covid-19. The provincial government requires face masks and contactless registration using SafePass app to enter the Trade and Food Fair. Gov. Singson also announced that children under 15 years and senior citizens are not permitted to enter the Fair.

     “Kannawidan” is a local term used by the Ilocanos which means ‘a traditional practice’. This occasion had opened the eyes of the Ilocanos to the culture and traditions their ancestors in the past had brought them. It’s also their way of celebrating the Ilocano spirit that continues to drive locals to boost their home province.
